Lowell Thomas Simmons

Lowell Thomas Simmons, age 91, Jonesborough, passed away at home June 27, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was born January 19, 1933, to the late Charles and Tullia Kinnick Simmons. Mr. Simmons was the last of his seven siblings to pass. In addition to his parents in was preceded in death by his siblings, brothers, Cecil, Harry, Dana, and Hugh Lee; sisters, Louise Scott, Wyona Miller, and Ruby Simmons.
He had a strong love for God and his family.
Mr. Simmons attended Green Pine Elementary, graduated from Happy Valley High School and earned a BS degree in education at Milligan College. He taught 33 years at Happy Valley Middle School.
Mr. Simmons had a love of the land from an early age and was happiest working his farm.
Mr. Simmons proudly served his country in the United States Army.
Mr. Simmons was community oriented and earned 55 years of perfect attendance with the Leesburg Ruritan Club. He served in many capacities and attended several national conventions. He attended Tacoma Church of God for many years. He worshiped with New Hope Brethren Church until his health prevented him from attending.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Frances Shell Simmons, two daughters, Yvonne Grindstaff (Bob), and Sherrilea Presley (Eddie), one son Thomas Simmons (Tammy); grandchildren, Christen Minnick (David), Greg Grindstaff (Kristina), Tyler Grindstaff (Jane), Cody Presley, Katie Jennings (Dustin), Bethany Cox (Brandon), Sara Johnson (Joe), Elizabeth, and Megan Barnes. Mr. Simmons also had great grandchildren; Riley, Jaxon, Isaac, Khloe, Zach, Blake, Madison, Jordan, Will, Mason, Ritchie, Hunter, Micah, and Kylesa; and a great grandson to arrive in July. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Dotty Simmons (Dana), and several nieces and nephews.
The family is grateful to Amedisys Hospice for their kindness and concern for Mr. Simmons. Home Instead also provided 2 great workers in the home, Teresa and Charlotte.

Funeral Services for Mr. Simmons will be Sunday 4:00 PM June 30, 2024 at New Hope Brethren Church, 352 New Hope Road, Jonesborough, TN 37659. The family will receive family and friends from 2:00 to 4:00 PM prior to the service. Committal Service and Entombment will be Monday July 1, 2024, 10:00 AM at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:50 AM.
