Becky Poteat Sims, 91 years old, peacefully passed away on November 21, 2025 at her
home in Jonesborough. She was the daughter of Jessie Hilbert Poteat and F.B. Poteat of
Jonesborough, Tennessee.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years Lewis R. Sims, and her four
siblings, John Poteat, Ann Poteat Childress, Jim Poteat and F.B. (Dick) Poteat, Jr.
Survivors include: Doug and Melanie Sims of Clinton, SC; and Laura and Craig Olson of
North Haven, CT; Grandchildren are James Sims of Laurens, SC; Marcus Sims of Rock
Hill, SC; Taylor and Meredith Sims (and Great Granddaughter Dawson Sims) of
Laurens, SC; Caleb Sims of Clinton, SC; and Mary Sarah Olson of St. Louis, MO.
Becky was born in Jonesborough, Tennessee and attended local grade schools. Becky
attended Mars Hill College, NC, and graduated from ETSU with a B.S. and a M.Ed.
Masters Degree in Education.
Becky was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church, Jonesborough. Most of her
adult life was spent in education serving 27 years as a teacher, administrator, and
consultant for Washington County and TN Department of Education. She was very
interested in any 4-H Club activity, especially the cattle shows. She loved all of her
“other children,” both 4-Hers and students.
After retirement, she and Lewis travelled the world. They visited Alaska, Hawaii,
Scotland, France, England, Ireland and countless other locations.
Becky wrote and published five books: Feelings of Jonesborough, Mama’s Recipes for
Mama’s Eyes, How to be happy in 2 minutes or less, Aren’t They Grand?, and I love to
Cook at Christmas.
Funeral Services will be held at the First Baptist Church, Jonesborough on Wednesday
November 26 at 11 am. Services will be conducted by John Moore from Jonesborough
Funeral Home. Graveside will follow at 1:30 PM in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Jonesborough. Pallbearers will be her son, son-in-law, four grandsons, and her
nephew.
Memorials may be made to TN 4-H Club Foundation, Knoxville, TN or to Saint Jude in
Memphis, TN.
